Motor vehicle mechanic is a two-year vocational programme where the students are taught about major overhauling, repairing and servicing skills of motor vehicles like buses, trucks, cars, motorcycles/scooters etc. During the training period, the students are also taught about how to maintain various parts of a vehicle like steering/handle, brakes, fault diagnosis, transmission, suspension etc. With almost every house having a motor vehicle (two-wheeler or four-wheeler) in the cities, towns and semi-towns, there is always a shortage of good and skilled motor vehicle mechanics. As a motor Vehicle Mechanic, you will work on the mechanical, electrical, and electronic parts of motor vehicles including the engine, brakes, clutch, transmission, suspension systems, electrical systems, electronic sensors, mechatronic systems, etc. You need to fix, maintain, reassemble, replace, repair, and overhaul these mechanical, electrical, and electronic components and systems according to the needs and demands of the customers.
You will have to inspect and test vehicles. You will deal with engine failures, mechanical, electrical, electronic, and mechatronic systems malfunctions, body damage, etc. You will also carry out routine maintenance of all these vehicle components, parts, and systems from time to time. You will also have to look after cleaning, washing, painting, and final appearance of the vehicle after completing your repair and maintenance services. You usually need driving experience to do this job as you may need to test drive the vehicles yourself before starting with your repair services and also after the repair and maintenance work is completed.

Mechanic Motor Vehicle is a vocational trade in ITI which is also known as the Automobile trade in ITI. The course deals with the study of repairing, assembling, servicing, overhauling, and testing skills of various types of vehicles such as cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, scooters, etc.
The duration of the course is 2 years. During these two years, you were taught a lot of things through practical training such as repairing vehicle engines, brakes, suspension, steering, etc.
The mechanic motor vehicle or ITI automobile course comes under the Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS) which is constituted under the Directorate General of Training, Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Government of India.
